Almost 1,900 leaders help to lead children’s, youth and families’ ministry across the diocese and new people get involved every year.

This ministry simply would not happen without their effort and so Julie, Tim and the Diocesan Development Officer, Andrew Brannigan, work to support, train and resource leaders every year.

Team Opportunities
For growing leaders
Team opportunities
for growing leaders

The involvement of volunteer leaders is vital to the successful running of youth and children ministry and growing the faith of children and young people. However it is also important that leadership opportunities grow the skills and faith of the volunteer leaders themselves. To this end we provide a number of opportunities for leaders to get involved in various teams to gain vital skills and experience while running programmes.

Typical skills learned include programme planning and preparation, group work, teaching, leading discussions, up-front skills and relational and communication skills.

Typical opportunities for leaders in our team ministries include leadership at Confirmation Weekends and Summer Madness, Holiday Bible Clubs, diocesan events such as the Children’s Praise Party and Saturday Night Live, overseas teams and organisation committees such as the Youth and Children’s Working Groups.

Leaders in Training

Leaders in Training (L.I.T) Programme
The leadership development of young people is important not just for the growth of children’s and youth ministry in our parishes, but in many other aspects of life. The L.I.T (Leaders In Training) programme is a diocesan initiative for anyone aged 15+ that involves 3 distinct but connected levels of training and development which would steadily progress their growth in leadership and increase the expectations of commitment and ability involved.
#1. LIT Course: Aimed at 15-18 year olds and involving 7 training sessions on Biblical leadership including a weekend residential. Each participant will receive their own course handbook and recieve a certificate on completion. No prior experience of leadership will be necessary.
#2. LIT Camp: A 5-day camp aiming to grow young people’s leadership character and skills. Focussing on Bible studies,Outdoor activities, Group work and leadership skills, ‘Upfront’ opportunities to lead worship, Organisational leadership opportunities focussing on the background work, Servant leadership development like cooking, cleaning & other ways to help.
#3. LIT Plus: Only for those who have participated in the LIT Camp, LIT Plus will build on the skills and experience gained on the camp and apply it to a supervised junior leadership opportunity. LIT Plus will finish with certification and a two-year personal plan developed with each participant to continue their leadership development, experience and training.

Every year our Department also take a number of Essential Roadshow training events to various churches across the diocese. These Roadshow evenings last for a few hours and serve to provide basic training and resources and initiatives for the year ahead.

The training takes place in multiple locations and dates so hopefully one will be close to you.

Leader Training
Essentials Core skills

The Essentials training day is aimed at volunteer leaders and focuses on the core skills necessary for good children and youth ministry.

Our training days will tend to focus on workshop based training in areas like delivering talks, planning, up-front skills, group work and so on. However they will also involve the launching of new resources and opportunities for the year ahead.

The Essentials Training day tends to be at the end of May to allow planning for the year ahead. Cost is £15 but this includes a resource pack and all the lunch you can eat!
